FCCY History
CCY
It all started with the Chinese Catholic Youth (CCY) which was founded under the tutelage of the Student Catholic Action on March 1954 in Manila by Rev. Fr. Louis Papilla, S.J. Starting with one unit, composed of 6 former Chinese Christopher members the group swelled rapidly within 2 years to 115 members in four Manila units: Binondo, St. Jude, Mandaluyong-San Juan and Pasay and 128 members in various provincial units - Aparri(Tuguegarao), Cebu, Lucena and Tacloban. His Excellency, the Most Rev. Msgr. Juan B. Velasco, O.P., D.D. Bishop of Amoy, Vicar General of the Archdioceses of Manila for the Chinese Parishes and General Director of all Chinese Catholics in the Philippines granted the group one year probation before its formal recognition.
From CCY to FCCY
The Chinese Catholic Youth was organized for the purpose of giving special training for young Chinese Catholics to tackle the evangelization of the Chinese Community. It was founded to provide more leadership training and spiritual formation to prepare for a better and a true Catholic community among the Chinese in the future. In 1976, the organization's official name was changed to " Filipino-Chinese Catholic Youth (FCCY)" to keep up with the times. With the passing away of the Most Rev. Msgr. Juan B. Velasco, O.P., D.D., the Most Rev. Msgr. Teodoro Buhain, D.D. was appointed as the new General Director for all Chinese Apostolates and Rev. Fr. Santiago Leon, S.J. as the National Ecclesiastical Assistant for FCCY.
Cebu
In Cebu, it started as Chinese Catholic Youth (CCY) where the Jesuit Fathers had a small house at Mabini Street near the Cebu Cathedral. When the Sacred Heart Church (formerly known as the Our Lady Queen of China Parish) was built at D. Jakosalem Street, the CCY lay low. However in 1978, Rev. Fr. Peter Li, S.J. and Mr. Juan Engtiong Yu decided to revive CCY but with the new name, FCCY. The first group of members came from Cebu Eastern College (formerly Cebu Chinese High School) Fr. Li was the spiritual adviser and Mr. Yu as the moderator. Since then FCCY-Cebu made a great impression by hosting the Leadership Seminar in 1986, and Conventions last 1981 and 1995 and winning prestigious awards.
Establishing the Constitution
By 1999, FCCY re-examined its organizational structure and re-organized to cater to the needs of the new generation of Chinese-Filipino youths. FCCY now exists as a mandated national organization by the formal approval of the Catholic Hierarchy of the Philippines, particularly under the Chinese-Filipino Apostolate Office. With a new vision: A dynamic organization of spiritually mature Filipino-Chinese Catholic youth, the FCCY National Directorate was formed which composed of 6 National Stewards and 7 Regional Stewards under the guidance of the remarkable Rev. Fr. Peterson Tieng, LRMS as the National Spiritual Director.
